Using Mulch in Your Garden: The Cozy Blanket Your Plants Actually Want

Mulch may not sound exciting at first. It does not bloom, smell like a rose, or show up in garden photos saying, “Look at me!” But make no mistake, using mulch in your garden is one of the smartest things you can do for healthy plants. Mulch is like a good helper in the garden: quiet, dependable, and not nearly as dramatic as a wilted hydrangea in July.

At Bobby & Lynn’s Plant Farm, we believe mulch deserves more credit. A good layer of mulch helps hold moisture in the soil, keeps roots cooler during hot weather, reduces weeds, and makes garden beds look clean and finished. Basically, mulch is the garden version of putting on a nice shirt before company comes over.

One of the biggest benefits of mulch is weed control. Weeds love bare soil because they are rude and have no respect for your weekend plans. Adding mulch helps block sunlight from reaching weed seeds, which makes it harder for them to sprout. Will mulch stop every weed? No. Weeds are stubborn little freeloaders. But mulch can definitely make your garden easier to manage.

Mulch also helps with soil moisture retention. Instead of water evaporating quickly from the soil, mulch helps keep moisture where plant roots can use it. This is especially helpful during hot, dry weather when your plants are thirsty and your hose is somehow always kinked.

When applying mulch around flowers, shrubs, trees, and landscape plants, aim for about 2 to 3 inches deep. Too little mulch will not do much good, and too much mulch can cause problems. Avoid piling mulch against plant stems or tree trunks. That famous “mulch volcano” look may be popular in parking lots, but your plants are not impressed. Keep mulch pulled back a few inches so stems can breathe.

Organic mulch, such as shredded bark, wood chips, pine needles, leaves, or compost, can also improve soil over time as it breaks down. That means mulch is not just decorating your garden; it is working the night shift.

The secret to mulching garden beds correctly is simple: spread it evenly, keep it off the stems, refresh it as needed, and let it do its job.

At Bobby & Lynn’s Plant Farm, we love mulch because it helps gardens stay healthier, neater, and easier to care for. Plus, anything that helps fight weeds without requiring a wrestling match deserves a spot in the garden.
